The cast gives Jack a hard time about the veracity of the offer. Phil introduces Jack to his new arranger, Mr. Blue, who laughs uncontrollably. Jack discusses next week's play, "Romeo and Juliet." After a brief preview of the play, the sponsor calls and tells Jack that he cannot do Romeo and Juliet next week on the show. 289 PREPARING FOR NEW YORK 3/20/38 Jack and Don talk about the coming of spring. Jack breaks the news that he is going to New York next week for the broadcast, so he will not need the cast or orchestra next week. Harry Von Zell is discussed, as he will replace Don when Jack broadcasts from New York. Kenny comes in and talks about the suitcase that Jack borrowed for his trip, made from live aligator. Jack complains about Abe Lyman. A collect telegram arrives from Abe Lyman threatening Jack to use his orchestra when he is in New York. Mary arrives and sings praises of spring. Women's hats are discussed, leading to a string of gags about hats made from food. Jack decides, despite much grief from Phil, to hire Abe Lyman and has Mary take a telegram down to notify him. Jack speaks to Fred Allen on the phone, where Fred asks for Jack's boy scout knife to be on the show. Jack leaves the program to pack, taking Mary and Kenny with him. Rochester complains about how Jack works him so hard and informs Jack that the Maxwell needs repairs. Andy Devine drops by to say good-bye to Jack. Schlepperman stops by with Jack's laundry. Kenny gets locked in Jack's trunk, but Mary and Jack leave him to go eat. Phil Baker's 5th anniversary show is mentioned at the end of the program. 290 HARRY VON ZELL SUBS FOR DON WILSON 3/27/38 Harry Von Zell substitutes for Don Wilson, and Abe Lyman and His Orchestra substitute for Phil Harris and His Orchestra. Jack talks with Von Zell and Lyman, then Bob Ripley, of "Believe It Or Not" fame, shows up to interview Jack some questions. Von Zell struggles with the Jell-O commercial, then Kate Smith shows up and reads her letter from Mary before she sings her song. Jack reassures Kenny that Kate is not taking his place on the show. Rochester shows up to ask for an advance on his salary so he can buy his girl a sunlamp. Fred Allen arrives and insists on the boy scout knife that Jack promised him for appearing on the program. The two comedians discuss their pictures and bicker about each other. Allen storms out, and Lyman's flute player steals Jack's boy scout knife back. Phil and Jack talk about Phil's recent stay in Waukegan. Mary arrives and kisses Don and Phil, but refuses to kiss Jack in front of the audience. Phil's new orchestra is discussed, then Kenny arrives and is formally announced. Kenny speaks with an English accent because he has been in Europe over the summer. Phil arrives with his date, Barbara, then Don shows up having just soaped a nearby house with Jell-O slogans. A fight soon begins when the guests try to lay claims on what little food Jack has. Andy Devine comes over and reminisces with Barbara, as they went to high school together. The cook eats the squab that Jack was going to serve, so Jack sends Rochester to the store for frankfurters, but he phones to tell Jack he cannot get them because Jack failed to give him money for them. Phil is late, so Jack tells the gang about his scheme to make Phil jealous by taking Barbara out to the Wilshire Bowl. Phil arrives and Jack brags about stealing Barbara from him, but Phil laughs it off. Jack tells Phil that Barbara sent him roses, and Phil tells Jack that is only because he told her that Jack had died. Jack wonders if Barbara really likes him, and Mary whispers a plan to Jack so he can find out. He and Mary leave the studio with Rochester to pursue Mary's plan, which ends up being a visit to a fortune teller, Madame Zombie. As the Madame is busy, the trio waits for her, but Rochester is afraid and eventually runs out to the car. When they get to talk to Madame Zombie, she sees Barbara kissing another man.
